Homeowners who become artist members of our nonprofit organization have a unique opportunity to play a vital role in fostering a vibrant and inclusive community for resident artists.
Hosting a residency is a chance to open your space to creativity, connection, and care. As a Resident Advisor, you live in your own home and help guide the day-to-day rhythm of the house—not as a landlord, but as a fellow artist committed to shared living and mutual support.
You’ll welcome new residents, coordinate upkeep with the nonprofit, and help shape a respectful, joyful, artist-centered environment. In return, Sentient Meat reimburses you for approved household costs and may support property improvements that benefit residents.
You don’t have to do it all alone—residents are expected to contribute to shared chores, and many choose to take part in the Shared Effort Initiative, pitching in on extra garden work, repairs, and upkeep in exchange for lower program costs. That means more hands, less stress.
If you’re an artist with space to share—and a passion for community—we’d love to hear from you. We’re happy to walk you through what to expect, how reimbursements work, and how we support you as a host.
This isn’t a rental. It’s a relationship. One built on trust, care, and the wild, sustaining joy of making things work together through mutual aid.
Sentient Meat does not co-own participant properties. Homeowners retain full legal ownership and responsibility for their home, while choosing to host resident artists in collaboration with our nonprofit program. Participation in the residency does not create a landlord–tenant relationship between the homeowner and residents.
We recommend that homeowners carry appropriate homeowner’s insurance if feasible, especially for properties with active residencies. While not required by the program, having insurance can help protect your home and the artists living in it. Sentient Meat does not provide property or liability insurance for participating locations, so we encourage each host to consider their needs and risks individually.
Financial compensation for homeowners is provided in the form of reimbursement for approved maintenance, repairs, renovations, and improvements to the property. Expenditures are subject to board review, and any expenses over certain limits require pre-approval.
Homeowners may also be eligible for reimbursement for repairs needed to prepare a space for residency activity. Larger renovations may be reimbursed over time, depending on the program’s available funds and projected residency contributions.
Property owners may opt into the Shared Effort Initiative, where residents actively participate in maintaining our shared space while earning credits toward their residency contributions. This initiative encourages everyone to pitch in, making it easier to sustain a welcoming, vibrant space where artists support one another and nurture creativity.
Homeowners with a passion for fostering community and supporting artists are invited to join our artist residency program. Together, participants can create a welcoming and inspiring environment where artists thrive and meaningful work grows.
