Participation Agreement

By participating in any Sentient Meat program, event, or community gathering, you agree to the following terms. This agreement applies to all participants, including event attendees, workshop students, volunteers, and community members.

1. Purpose of Participation

Your participation grants access to one or more programs, events, or community gatherings offered by Sentient Meat, Inc., a nonprofit arts organization. These may include educational workshops, film screenings, flow arts gatherings and spin jams, fire performance events, community celebrations, and other programming hosted, sponsored, or permitted by Sentient Meat and its partner organizations.

2. Nonprofit Educational Use

Where participation includes attendance at a structured educational session — including the monthly film workshop series — all sessions are conducted by and for a nonprofit educational organization in compliance with U.S. copyright exemption law (17 U.S. Code § 110(1)). Participation in educational sessions is limited to enrolled participants as part of a structured, face-to-face teaching activity.

3. Safer Spaces Policy

All participants are required to read and abide by our Safer Spaces Policy before attending any Sentient Meat program, event, or gathering. This policy supports mutual respect, consent, accessibility, and accountability within all Sentient Meat spaces.

4. Community Standards & Expected Conduct

All participants are expected to:

  • Respect the boundaries, pronouns, and identities of all community members
  • Communicate with honesty, kindness, and consent
  • Ask before photographing or filming others
  • Refrain from hate speech, harassment, or behavior that endangers others
  • Accept feedback and take responsibility for repairing harm when asked
  • Participate in good faith in community accountability processes when needed
  • Follow all written and verbal instructions from organizers, event facilitators, resident artists, and facilities personnel

Sentient Meat reserves the right to remove any participant from an event, program, or property at any time if their conduct poses a risk to the safety or wellbeing of others. Participation in Sentient Meat programs is a privilege, not a right.

5. Volunteer Participation

This section applies to participants taking on an organizational or facilitation role at any Sentient Meat event or program — including setup, breakdown, coordination, fire safety support, or event facilitation. If you are attending only as a guest or audience member, this section does not apply to you.

Participants taking on a volunteer role additionally agree to:

  • Act as a representative of Sentient Meat while serving in your volunteer role
  • Maintain sobriety during any active shift or facilitation responsibility
  • Treat all participants, staff, and community members with respect and professionalism
  • Safeguard any sensitive organizational or participant information you may encounter
  • Honor your commitments or provide reasonable advance notice if you are unable to fulfill them

6. Participation Fees

Where applicable, participation fees, ticket sales, or donation-based contributions support program costs and help keep Sentient Meat's community programming accessible. No portion of fees is distributed as income to any private individual. Sentient Meat is committed to access; no one is turned away for lack of funds where capacity allows. Please reach out to inquire about financial assistance.

7. Term of Agreement

This agreement covers participation in the specific program, event, or gathering for which you participate. Participants in recurring programming (such as the monthly film series or regular spin jams) may be asked to re-acknowledge this agreement on an annual or per event basis. For ticketed events, agreement is confirmed at the time of ticket purchase.

8. Assumption of Risk & Liability Waiver

Sentient Meat programs and events may take place on private property and in community venues including barns, farms, outdoor spaces, and other non-commercial environments. Activities may include flow arts, spin jams, juggling, hooping, fire performance, aerial arts, dance, movement workshops, fitness activities, and community gatherings. These environments and activities may involve:

  • Uneven ground, natural terrain, and outdoor conditions
  • Agricultural, under-construction, or non-commercial structures
  • Animals, insects, and weather-related hazards
  • Fire, heat, and performance equipment
  • Physical exertion and the possibility of falls, burns, or collisions
  • Equipment failure or property damage
  • Allergic reactions or physical and emotional strain

By participating, I acknowledge that:

  1. I understand these activities involve inherent and voluntary risks, including the risk of serious injury or death.
  2. I voluntarily assume full responsibility for all such risks, both known and unknown, even if arising from the negligence of others.
  3. It is my responsibility to determine whether I am physically and mentally able to safely participate. Sentient Meat does not provide medical advice; I am encouraged to seek medical clearance if unsure of my ability to participate safely.
  4. I am responsible for my own personal safety, transportation, and supervision of any personal property brought to the event.

Being of lawful age and in consideration of being permitted to participate, I hereby release and forever discharge Sentient Meat, Inc. and its partner organizations (including Home Afarm Co-op), and their respective directors, officers, members, residents, volunteers, staff, successors, and assigns from all manner of actions, causes of action, debts, claims, and demands for or by reason of any injury to person or property (including injury resulting in death) sustained as a consequence of participation in such activities, except in cases of gross negligence or willful misconduct.

I have carefully read this agreement, fully understand it, and am signing voluntarily. I understand that by signing, I agree to be forever prevented from suing or otherwise claiming against the above parties for any injury, property loss, or damages sustained during or related to participation, except in cases of gross negligence or willful misconduct. I have been encouraged to seek independent legal advice prior to signing.

I understand I would not be permitted to participate unless I agreed to this release.

I will be liable for any damage or injury I cause to premises or persons at events.

9. Heirs & Assigns

This agreement is intended to be binding upon me and my heirs, executors, administrators, legal representatives, and assigns.

10. Privacy & Records

Sentient Meat collects only the minimum information needed to maintain program and event records (such as sign-in confirmation, emergency contact, and contribution records). These records are retained securely by the organization for legal compliance and are never shared, published, or used for marketing.

11. Electronic Signatures

By choosing to participate in any Sentient Meat program or event, I agree to use electronic signatures, which shall have the same force and effect as a written signature. Electronic signatures may include checking a box, typing a name, or submitting a form on Sentient Meat websites or sign-in systems.

12. Governing Law

This agreement will be construed in accordance with and governed by the laws of the State of Ohio.

13. Full Agreement & Signature

I have carefully read this agreement, fully understand it, and am signing voluntarily. I understand that by signing, I agree to the terms above for the duration of my participation in this program or event. I have been encouraged to seek independent legal advice prior to signing if I have any questions.

This agreement does not constitute a lease, employment contract, or landlord-tenant relationship.

By participating in Sentient Meat programming, I agree to the Sentient Meat Participation Agreement in its entirety.
