Since its founding in 2014, Sentient Meat Inc. has operated a pilot program of the Artist Residency model that we plan to apply to future operations on a larger scale.
The model includes subsidised rent and housing provided below market value for residents, as well as the opportunity for residents to further increase their rent credits through volunteer labor, including maintenance of the housing space and/or education and outreach programs run through the organization.
Resident selection is based on an application process that includes a letter of interest, portfolio or work samples, statement of financial responsibility, and optional additional materials. Selections are made by the board of directors as housing space becomes available.
Future activities will focus on development programs in Southeast Columbus neighborhoods including the Olde Towne East, Franklin Park and South Main neighborhoods. We intend to acquire new properties through the Columbus Land Bank, reducing vacant lots and transforming acquired properties into additional artist residency and public exhibition space, including both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Properties will additionally be used for outreach programs to benefit their surrounding communities through educational mentorship with local youth, open gallery showings and other activities for public benefit.
These programs and activities will be supported by active fundraising efforts, which comprise the bulk of the organization’s current activities as of the writing of this document.
Our current housing program has room for four artists that can receive low-cost or free housing. In a society where art and artists are often devalued and social safety nets are heavily restricted and even more heavily stigmatized, it’s important to organize and create the resources we need to support each other and let communal effort prevail.
All rooms are currently filled. Please check back later for vacancies.
We are also looking to expand! We have recently been looking at purchasing an old dormitory with capacity for 25 residents.
We're looking to host monthly meetings for special interests like performance, videography, flow arts, tabletop gaming, and more! Details coming soon!
